AL East Projections for 2011

With Spring Training starting, it is time to look ahead to the upcoming season.  The American League has probably had more changes exciting than any other division in baseball, which will lead to an interesting season.  The biggest loser during the off-season is the Tampa Bay Rays.  They signed Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon, which would have been exciting for them five or six years ago, since both are clearly on the back end of their careers.  The loss of Carl Crawford is a huge loss for them, which ended up being a huge gain for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox made the biggest additions than any other team in the division, and they are my predicted team to win the division.  They have arguably the fastest outfield in the league with the addition of Carl Crawford, and if he and Jacoby Ellsbury can stay healthy they will be unstoppable on the basepaths.  If Adrian Gonzalez can keep his shoulder (which he had operated on) healthy, we could have the one-two punch we used to have with David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez a few years ago.  All in all, it should be an exciting season, and below is my prediction for the standings in the AL East.

1.  Boston Red Sox
2.  New York Yankees
3.  Toronto Blue Jays
4.  Tampa Bay Rays
5.  Baltimore Orioles
