Pats Draft: What Do They Need?

The Patriots are known for stockpiling draft picks, and this year they have two picks in each of the first three rounds.  After leading the NFL with a 14-2 record, they have a great opportunity to greatly improve their team with all of these picks.  Over the past few years, they have made a lot of good defensive picks, and come next season (if there is a next season), that young defense will have one more year under their belt.  Their offense has been their strength, but they tend to be on fire or not effective at all.  If the Jets game proved anything, it's that they still have a lot of room for improvement.

What should they do in the draft?  They need to draft a player that is explosive and can take over a game.  With the exception of Tom Brady, they don't have a game changer.  With all of the picks they have, they can afford to get a game changer on both sides of the ball.  They might have to trade up, but if they can get somebody like A.J. Green from Georgia, they will have their explosive wide receiver they need.  I would be just as satisfied if they traded up to get a top-level running back, but that never seems to be a part of the plans for the Pats.

On defense, their biggest need is at the outside linebacker position.  They could try to trade up to draft Von Miller, or they could sit back and possibly use a second round pick for Akeem Ayers if he falls back that far.  It would also be a good idea if they wanted to draft an explosive corner back like Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara.  Their young defense did improve as the season went on last year, but they do lack some depth at CB and OLB.

They might just do what they always do and trade their top picks for more future picks.  Who knows, they could end up with three picks in each of the first three rounds next year.  Either way they go, they should be even better than they were last year if the season goes on as planned.  If they end up with more explosion on both sides of the ball, and they could end up with the potential to win more than 14 next season.
